Trees growing even after being nearly broken off

We went for a walk the other day and saw these trees that appear to have been crushed down by a much larger tree when it fell. I have never seen trees that are so severely broken off and still have branches and leaves growing. Nature sure is strange.

Interesting that they didn't just snap off.

Yeah, I can't explain how they are still alive.

yeah, the root system is there, the core of the tree being stable enough, some of them survive and persist.
depends on the type of plant or tree also... some things are relatively delicate and other sorts of trees can survive Armageddon.

Yes, many of them are Cottonwoods.
