We have an ISSUE! — We are OVERWEIGHT!- Iowa Flying Farmer- new truck

Video from an Iowa Cropduster who upgraded his truck because his new trailer put his truck 600 lbs overweight.

Interesting easy to watch video on the farmer's search for a replacement truck.

Here comes the nitpicker in me, mainly because it is pretty clear that this is one of those 'for the clicks' videos.

At least they realized they were overweight and fixed the problem.

But, it was a surprise? Did they really not research enough ahead of time to realize that they would be on the hairy edge of overloading their GM?

And then they go and buy a fully loaded Lariat SRW one ton.

People can bash on Ford all they want, but they do one thing that makes figuring out your towing capacities super easy. They have a website that you can plop any F series Vin into, and it will instantly give you the basic ratings....

https://www.ford.com/support/towing-calculator

One thing Ford doesn't tell you easily that they touched on in the video is their separate axle weight ratings, those you would have to dig for.

But their towing guides are generally very good:

figure they knew they were over when they bought the RV..

then again you find the following to be true also.

we were just in a RV park yesterday where somebody had a Nimitz Class Toy hauler and was using a 2500 to pull it.

I don't see how they could have been surprised. It did make for good video drama though.

Pulling a trailer that large with a SRW isn't something I would want to do. The DRW adds much stability in cross winds. I applaud him for not getting a short box this time. I made that mistake once too, never again.

I was disappointed in the video.

Video stated they were going to compare RAM/ Chevy/ Ford. Didn't see the comparison, juts the end purchase. I figured a crop duster might have provided a good comparison of the three makes.

That would be the cult of the IRV2, if you don't have a DRW 1-Ton you're not worthy.
what is IRV2?

I'll tell you what.. my RV has a published UVW of 12500.. and a GVWR of 15500, and my truck has a published tow rating of 21000
but I would be willing to say whatever the manufacturers of either vehicle claim, you can figure the RV is heavier than listed and the truck is going to be far more comfortable at a weight less than they claim..

so figure what you need based on the GVWR of the RV and take 20 to 25% off of what the TV OEMs claim as the Tow Rating of the truck and you will be in a lot better shape if you plan on doing alot of this towing stuff..

disregard if you only go a few miles because then you can get away with anything

Our truck 5th wheel tow rating is around 30k, we tow 20k. No way would I want to tow 30k with this truck, 20k is plenty.
