The San Francisco De Asis church is one of the most visited sites in Taos, NM. The church is 211 years old and the garrison around the church was started sometime around 1750, but there are no records to indicate exactly when the first structure was built.

The church is still in use today, we had to kinda hurry with the tour of the inside, because a mass was about to start. The church is in great condition, but being adobe, it requires annual maintenance to keep the water out. When you enter the church it feels like you step back into time. The church is beautiful and has an old and simple feel.

I agree. We spent a good bit of time there when we were in Taos. Amazing architecture. Did you check out the “Mystery Painting” ?

Across from the church in another building. It’s a picture of Jesus that doesn’t really glow but can be seen in pitch black darkness. It was originally in the church but people kept picking at the paint on it so they moved it. You see one picture in the light and a different one in the darkness. It just kinda radiates not glow. No pics allowed. Facing the church from the courtyard, it’s on the right next to one of the shops.

Darn, didn't see it.

It’s worth seeing. We also took the tour at the Pueblos and went in that church also. No pics allowed inside. It was built in the 1800’s after the Spanish-American War. The original church was destroyed in the war. The original one was built in the 1600’s and part of the original structure and graveyard are still there.
