The area between the Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake is the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. We stayed here for a long weekend in October 2019 for three days. This is barely enough time to scratch the surface of what's in this very large NRA. There are many many miles of hiking trails, horse stables and horse trails, boating, fishing, camping, etc.

We stayed in the T sites at Hillman Ferry campground and found it to be quiet and loved the huge pines amongst the sites. The Woodlawn nature center had a large display of area wildlife and some great trails. There is an 1850's era iron furnace known as the "Mammoth Furnace" that the ruins still stand today - definitely worth seeing if history interests you. The 700 acre Elk & Bison Prairie is a drive through area where you can see elk and bison roaming, which we also enjoyed.
