How do you protect your dog's feet from Goat Heads?

I keep hearing about Goat Heads and how awful they are. We also now live in an area with Goat Heads. How do you protect your dog's feet when you take them for a hike?

I've seen some dogs wearing those dog booties. We just learned where they were on the trails around our old town and avoided those. We've turned back on hikes because of them. You feel pretty bad when the dog wants to hold all his feet up.
