Last week we took this route to avoid Dallas, which didn't turn out to be a good route.
On the way home we decided to take US-79 from Austin to TX-43 in Henderson to US-59 in Marshall, then up to Texarkana to get on I-30. These were all great roads with mostly 70 MPH speed limits. There are a few towns you'll go through, but not that many. We'll certainly drive to Austin in the future and now that we know about this route, we won't be seeing Dallas any time soon!
