If you prefer a more scenic, rural route instead of the interstate then take route 460. This route runs parallel to interstate 81 for the most through Roanoke and Salem and has plenty of amenities too.
There are lots of gas and diesel stations and there is a few Dollar General stores, plenty of restaurants. This road is travelled by many campers and truckers as an alternative to interstate 81. The road is in good shape too. Many areas of scenery and some houses too.
You can also access Route 460 from Interstate 77 but it takes about an hour when getting off the exit from Interstate 77.
This route connects many states like Virginia, Kentucky, and West Virginia.
